Reflection on Using Timetoast for an Agatha Christie Timeline
Creating a timeline of Agatha Christie's life and works using Timetoast was a highly engaging and educational activity for my students.
Goals of the activity:
The main goals were to help students organize historical and literary information in a structured way, enhance their research and summarizing skills, and improve their digital literacy. Additionally, I wanted them to understand the evolution of Agatha Christie's career and the impact of her works over time.
Advantages of using Timetoast:
Timetoast proved to be an excellent tool for this activity because it is visually appealing, and allows students to see the chronological order of events. It also fosters collaboration, as students could work together to research and input key dates and facts.
Steps we followed in class:
I introduced Agatha Christie's biography and literary contributions through a short presentation.
Students were divided into small groups, each assigned a specific period of her life or a selection of her books.
They researched their assigned topics, summarizing key events and noting down publication dates.
We discussed how to structure the timeline effectively, ensuring coherence and accuracy.
Students then created the timeline using Timetoast, adding descriptions and images where appropriate.
Problems we had to face:
Some students initially struggled with using the platform, especially with formatting text and uploading images. Although they are digital native, they have problems with some applications and platforms. Additionally, a few had difficulty selecting the most relevant events, as Christie's life was filled with significant milestones.
My students' reactions:
The students found the activity engaging and enjoyed the interactive aspect of building a timeline. Many appreciated how it helped them visualize historical sequences more effectively than traditional note-taking. Some even expressed interest in using Timetoast for other subjects.
Things to improve:
In the future, I would provide a short tutorial on using Timetoast before starting the activity to minimize technical difficulties. I would also encourage students to critically evaluate which events are most significant instead of trying to include too many.
How Timetoast helped achieve learning goals:
By using Timetoast, students were able to structure information chronologically, which improved their understanding of Agatha Christie's literary timeline.
